Diamond Valley

Land

Long before utility lands carried a sacrifice clause as a matter of course, this one established the template: a colorless land that converts creatures into a resource other than mana. The conversion here is toughness-to-life, and the activation cost is reduced to a tap and the sacrifice itself, which means the card asks nothing of your mana and everything of your board. That economy is what makes it dangerous in a way the rate does not advertise. A creature you were going to lose anyway becomes a life gain; a token becomes a life gain; a creature with a death trigger becomes a life gain that also does something else. The land turns every creature on your side into two resources stacked on top of each other, and it does so without competing with your spells for mana. Every subsequent design in this space (Phyrexian Tower, High Market, Miren, the Moaning Well, the modern wave of utility lands with sacrifice clauses) is working in the shadow of this template: a colorless land that taps for a non-mana effect, gated by a sacrifice rather than a life cost or a tempo cost. The tap in the activation cost is the discipline that keeps the card honest: it caps the outlet at one creature per turn, which is what separates this from a free-recurring engine and keeps it a value land rather than a combo enabler.
