Long before utility lands carried a sacrifice clause as a matter of course, this one established the template: a colorless land that converts creatures into a resource other than mana. The tap in the activation cost is the discipline that keeps the card honest: it caps the outlet at one creature per turn, which is what separates this from a free-recurring engine and keeps it a value land rather than a combo enabler.
