Devoted Caretaker

Most protection effects color the shield with a single mana symbol: protection from red dodges burn, protection from white dodges targeted removal. This one shields against entire card types instead, and that shift in axis is what makes it strange. By granting protection from instants and sorceries, the activated ability does not care what color a spell is or what it does; it cares only that the threat is a spell on the stack rather than a creature on the board or a permanent already in play. That covers a wide swath of the spell-based interaction that existed when this kind of design first appeared: targeted burn, point removal, the bounce and the destroy and the damage all turn off at once, so long as they arrive as instants or sorceries. The catch is in what protection actually does and does not reach. Protection guards the permanent, not its controller, so an edict effect that makes you sacrifice a creature slides right past: there is no protection from being told to choose. An ability on a creature, a combat assignment, a planeswalker activation, anything that is not a spell on the stack, punches straight through too. The one-mana-and-a-tap cost protects only a single permanent per turn, and tapping the Caretaker means it cannot also block, which matters for a 1/2 whose two toughness is its only defense. It is a goalkeeper that guards one specific door and leaves the others open, an answer built for an era when the danger came packaged as spells.
