Desert's Due

Instant1 generic manaBlack mana

Two mana for negative two toughness is the going rate for a black shrink-spell, the kind of instant-speed answer that trades cleanly with early creatures and quietly ends a race. What lifts this above the baseline is the scaling clause tied to Deserts: each one you control widens the swing by another point in both directions, so a spell that starts as a modest combat trick can answer much larger bodies once the land type is on the battlefield. The design turns a nonbasic land type into a removal amplifier, which is a rarer piece of tension than it looks: most land-matters payoffs sit on permanents that reward a long game, while this one lives on an instant that wants to resolve now. That pushes deckbuilding toward loading up on Deserts not for the mana but for the multiplier, and rewards holding the card until the count is high enough to answer whatever the opponent commits. Without any Deserts it is still a functional early-game trade; with three or four it reads like a scaling, color-appropriate answer to the kinds of creatures black usually struggles to remove at two mana. The card asks a specific question of the deck around it, and the honest floor keeps it from being dead when the answer is no.
