Deny Existence

Instant2 generic manaBlue mana

Three mana for a hard counter that only ever points at creature spells is the premium that dedicated creature-countermagic charges: you give up the ability to answer anything noncreature in exchange for cleaner work against the things you can target. Essence Scatter does the same job a mana cheaper, which makes the extra cost the whole question. The answer is the exile clause. Most countermagic feeds the graveyard, and against the decks built to mine it, that is the same as handing over a delve fuel, a reanimation target, an escape resource, or a recursion engine. Countering a creature normally still leaves it sitting in a yard where it can crawl back; this one sends it somewhere it cannot be reanimated, returned, or escaped. The upgrade is worth most precisely when the creature you are stopping was always going to be more dangerous dead than alive: the threat that wants to die so it can come back better. The narrowness is the standing cost of any creature-only counter, and the extra mana over the baseline buys the rider that closes the recursion loophole. As a piece of design it is a small, sharp refinement of an old idea: not a more flexible counter, but a more final one.
