The phrasing is the entire mechanism: nothing can point a spell at a creature anywhere on the battlefield, and the line bites on the targeting step rather than the resolution, so removal spells, combat tricks, and Auras alike simply have no legal target. That makes it a stranger thing than a fog or a hexproof effect. It does not counter, regenerate, or grant immunity case by case; it quietly subtracts the entire category of spell-based, single-target creature interaction from the table. Crucially, the wall stops at spells. Activated and triggered abilities can still target creatures freely, so a tapper, a pinger, or a fight-on-resolution ability works exactly as it always did, and those abilities (alongside combat, sweepers, and effects that hit "all creatures" without choosing a target) remain live ways to break a board stall. The cost of that breadth is that it is symmetrical, shielding the opponent's board as readily as your own, and that the modern removal toolkit has drifted toward edicts, board wipes, and ability-based answers that were never spells in the first place. As an early experiment in white-style protection rendered in green, it reads as a designer measuring how much defensive control a single static line can carry before the game collapses into a creature-combat standoff. The answer was "quite a lot," which is also why green has rarely been handed an effect this absolute since.
