Defy Death

Sorcery3 generic manaWhite manaWhite mana

Reanimation is usually black's province, and white pays for trespassing on it with a tax: this spell costs more than the black staples that do the same job, returning the creature to the battlefield outright with no payoff sacrifice, no card disadvantage, just a sorcery-speed body for five mana. The Angel rider is where the design earns its keep. White's reanimation has always been hedged by color identity (it brings creatures back, but quietly, on a clause), and the two +1/+1 counters are the carrot that tells you what kind of deck this was built to live in. A reanimated Angel arriving two counters bigger turns a fair recursion spell into a closing play, and the upside scales with exactly the creatures white wants to be casting anyway. Strip the tribal kicker and you have a plain, color-shifted Zombify; keep it, and the card stops apologizing for being white. The cost carries the rest of the bargain: at five mana with no discount and no haste, it asks you to have already lost the creature and to spend a full turn getting it back, the friction that separates this from the black versions that turn one to three into a free reanimation. It is reanimation written in white's grammar, where the payoff is paid for upfront in mana rather than in life or in the graveyard.
