Deface

SorceryRed mana

Artifact removal has always come with a filler problem: when the opponent has nothing to blow up, the card is a dead draw, and generations of naturalize-style effects have rotted in hands for exactly that reason. The second mode here is a partial fix, and its specificity tells you how the card was built. Rather than fold in a generic creature-kill clause (which would price the spell out of the cheap artifact-hate role it exists to fill), the design narrows the creature mode to a single, deliberately awkward keyword: defender. Walls, a handful of pillow-fort blockers, the occasional token built only to hold the ground; the mode is a rider that costs the spell almost nothing to include, because destroying a defender rarely swings a game on its own. What it buys is not a guarantee against any creature deck (most creatures do not have defender, so a hand holding this against a beatdown board can still be stranded) but a hedge against the specific decks that lean on immobile blockers. It is a piece of quiet design economy: a color-appropriate one-mana answer that trims one narrow slice of its worst-case scenario without inflating into a flexible removal spell that would need to cost more. The two modes share a color and a mana value but almost never compete for the same target, which is the point; you are paying one mana for a Shatter effect that occasionally moonlights as an anti-Wall measure.
