Deep Analysis

Sorcery3 generic manaBlue mana

Card draw priced in two currencies. Drawing two cards for four mana has never been the deal: the deal is drawing two more for two mana and three life from the graveyard, which turns one card slot into a four-card swing across the game. That second casting is where the design lives. The life payment is the lever that keeps the rate from being free, and it does double duty: it caps how often a heavily damaged player can lean on it, and it actively feeds the strategies that want it. Reanimator and threshold decks wanted the cheap card flow and the graveyard fuel both, and a self-replacing sorcery that can be milled, discarded, or simply cast and cast again is exactly what those engines are built to abuse. The result is a card whose front half looks like a control filler and whose back half belongs to the aggressive-tempo and combo shells that didn't mind spending the life. Flashback was the whole conceit of its set, the keyword that let a spell exist twice, and few cards used it to draw a sharper line between the two casts than this one: full price up front, discount on the recursion, paid in blood as well as blue.
