Death Mutation

Sorcery6 generic manaBlack manaGreen mana

Eight mana to kill one creature is a terrible rate by itself, which tells you the kill was never the point. The payoff scales with the victim: destroy a fattie and the battlefield refunds you a swarm of Saprolings equal to its mana value, turning the opponent's biggest investment into your widest board. That inversion is the whole design conceit. The bigger and more expensive the threat you point this at, the more profit you bank, so the card punishes exactly the late-game bombs that other removal struggles to make a clean two-for-one against. It also slots into the Apocalypse cycle of gold cards built to merge two colors' strengths: black supplies the destruction that ignores regeneration, green supplies the token engine, and the result is removal that doubles as a creature-generation spell. The nonblack clause is the era's standard color-pie tax, keeping black's own threats off the menu, but in practice it rarely bites, since the targets worth spending eight mana on are seldom black anyway. Saproling synergies turn the byproduct from incidental bodies into a real plan: each token is fodder for a sacrifice outlet, a counter for an anthem, or a blocker that buys the turn you needed. Read as raw efficiency it looks bloated; read as a midrange value piece that converts an opponent's tempo into your own board state, the math finally lands.
