Death Cultist

Creature — Human WizardBlack mana

A one-drop body whose entire reason to exist is to die on demand, and to do it on a clock you control rather than the opponent's. The sacrifice carries no mana cost, which is the whole point: it converts a creature you no longer need into a guaranteed two-point life swing at instant speed, dodging the sorcery-speed window that limits most life-drain effects and arriving exactly when the math matters. That makes it less a creature than a stored instant, a single drain attached to a body that can chump-block, carry a counter, feed an aristocrat trigger, or simply sit on the battlefield as a threat the opponent plans around until you choose to cash it in. The 1/1 frame is the cost of admission; the value lives in the one-shot activation, and that activation costs nothing but the body itself. Where Gray Merchant of Asphodel scales drain to devotion in one big burst, this does the opposite work: it stores a single small swing you bank and spend on your terms, which is why it slots into any deck already turning creatures into resources. Modest in isolation, deliberately so, but the design is a clean expression of black's oldest exchange: a creature's death becomes the engine rather than the loss, an opponent's life total ticking down while yours ticks up, with the timing entirely in your hands.
