D'Avenant Trapper

Creature — Human Archer2 generic manaWhite mana

Most historic payoffs cash their trigger in for card advantage: a draw, a scry, some life. This one buys tempo instead, tapping an opposing creature every time you cast a qualifying spell. What the tap does turns entirely on when it happens. Historic spells are overwhelmingly sorcery-speed plays on your own main phase, which is exactly when a Falter effect earns its keep: tap the blocker before combat and it cannot stop your attack, so the trigger opens a lane through a would-be defender or shuts off a nettlesome activated-ability creature just long enough to swing past it. The catch lives on the other side of the turn. Whatever you tapped on your own turn untaps on the opponent's untap step, so a main-phase cast rarely blunts their return swing; it is offense, not a lock. The 3/2 body confirms the intent (it wants to be attacking while it accumulates casts), and the payoff scales with how densely a list packs its qualifying permanents, a curve full of legends and artifacts meaning a tap on nearly every attack. The honest ceiling is that the trigger keys off spells cast, not permanents already in play, so it goes inert the moment the qualifying cards run dry. That dependence is the whole identity: a build-around by construction, a payoff for an aggressive white shell that spits out a legend or artifact per turn, and dead weight without that shell wrapped around it.
