The trick to this kind of damage-prevention lord is that it shaves a point off every instance of damage, not every point, which is a subtler effect than the text suggests. A source dealing 2 to one of your Clerics still lands 1 after the shield, so a single copy keeps your one-toughness Clerics alive only against pingers and chip damage, not against a clean two-damage burn spell. Where it warps the math is the wide board, where most attacks and blocks resolve as single small exchanges. A 1/1 trading into a 1/1 now survives; a swarm of two-toughness Clerics shrugs off the one-damage and two-damage triggers that go-wide white mirrors are built on. Stack a second copy and the reduction doubles, quietly pushing every Cleric a full size up in combat math. The tribal gate is what balances the effect: it does nothing for any creature that is not a Cleric, tying its value entirely to how many you field and how small they are, since the cheaper the body, the larger the proportional gain. As a 3/3, it shields itself, which makes it stubborn against the incidental burn that would otherwise pick off a five-drop. The bargain is the era's tribal-matters logic in miniature: overwhelming inside the tribe, blank outside it.
