Dash Hopes

InstantBlack manaBlack mana

Hand the opponent a button labeled "ignore my counterspell," and they will press it almost every time. The wager structure here inverts the entire premise of control: rather than spending mana to deny a spell outright, you spend two black mana to present a bargain any player can refuse for five life. Against anything actually worth countering, that spell is worth far more than five life to the caster, so they simply pay and resolve it. The card bites only when life totals are already low or when the spell being stopped is itself lethal, which is exactly the spot where a plain hard counter would have ended the conversation without giving the opponent a vote. This is the "punisher" template, the same Faustian-decision design that animates Browbeat: the controlling player surrenders the outcome to the person being controlled. The flavor lands cleanly, because the spell promises to dash hopes and then watches the opponent buy their way out for pocket change in most board states. As a structural curiosity it is sharp; as a tool for stopping spells it asks you to read a window so narrow that the dependable two-mana version of the effect skips the negotiation entirely and never lets the opponent off the hook.
