Dark Maze

Creature — Wall4 generic manaBlue mana

A Wall that pays its own ransom to charge once, then disintegrates: that single line of activated text is the whole design statement. Walls in this era were almost universally pure inertia, four or five toughness of blocking and nothing else, parked to absorb a swing until the game went somewhere. This one wires in an escape hatch at no mana cost, trading the body permanently for one attack as a 4/5. The exile clause is what keeps the deal honest: you do not get to attack and keep the blocker, you cash the Wall out, so the activation is a closing move rather than a repeatable threat. It is a defensive piece that volunteers to stop being defensive exactly once, a more pointed idea than the rate suggests and a more deliberate one than most of its contemporaries managed. The catch is that the math rarely favors pulling the trigger: a 4/5 is a fine deterrent and a mediocre attacker, and exiling it the same turn means you are spending your best blocker to deal four. Think of it as an early experiment in giving a Wall agency, an attempt to make defensive permanents feel like they had a decision buried inside them rather than just a stat line, even if the decision usually resolves toward leaving it where it stands.
