Five toughness made it a wall that could still get into the air and chip away, the kind of creature that stonewalled red and ground aggressive starts to a halt, while one power and four mana guaranteed it never threatened to close a game; it needed roughly twenty swings to kill you. The rate looks laughable now, but in a format where most removal was narrow and color-keyed, an evasive blocker carried real structural value. The artifact typing is the load-bearing detail. It cuts both ways: Shatter and other artifact removal answered it cleanly, and a white deck with Swords to Plowshares exiled it without caring what it was made of, so the body was never hard to kill in any blanket sense. What the artifact typing specifically dodged was Terror, the era's go-to cheap kill spell, which could not target an artifact creature; that single gap is most of why a 1/5 flyer earned a slot in 1993. The card is best understood as the prototype for a long line of overpriced evasive defenders, sharpened into sleeker walls over the decades. Its weight is less about what it accomplished at tables than what it established: that a defensive body could carry flying, and that the cost of evasion on a tough, hard-to-remove permanent was set high and deliberately toothless.
