Damnable Pact

The X-sized symmetry is the whole hook: you point this at any player, including yourself, and the draw and the life loss are locked together at the same number. That gives black the kind of scalable card advantage it usually has to pay for with something other than mana, and the targeting clause turns the same spell into a finisher. Aim it at an opponent already low and the life loss becomes the kill, the draws an afterthought; aim it at yourself and you refill a hand for a flat cost of life, the resource black has always been willing to spend. The lineage here runs through black's long history of drawing-by-paying: the family of effects where life is just another mana pool to tap. What sets this design apart from a fixed-cost ancestor is that the player choice and the X variable do all the tuning. You decide how greedy to be, and the life total decides whether you can afford it. The double black in the cost keeps it honest as a color-pie statement: this is not splashable card draw, it is mono-black's reward for staying mono-black, the payoff that wants a life total deep enough to spend and a board stable enough to cash the cards.
