Punishing the artifact deck by turning its own board count into a liability is the whole strategic pivot here, and the design leans into a truth about multiplayer politics: artifact-heavy players are usually the ones with the biggest, most obvious commitment on the table. The Beast tokens scale off an opponent's artifact count rather than your own, which flips the usual green ramp instinct on its head; you are not rewarded for developing, you are rewarded for pointing at the player who overdeveloped. Against an artifact combo or a Treasure-flooded board, X can balloon into a small army at instant speed, letting you flash in blockers before an alpha strike or ambush an attacker mid-combat. Against a creature deck running no artifacts, it does nothing at all, and that variance is the honest cost of the effect: a spell whose ceiling and floor are both dictated by someone else's deck. The 3/3 green Beast is green's default token body, deliberately generic so the card reads as a scaling burst of stats rather than a synergy piece. It sits in the lineage of green catch-up cards that let a durdling ramp player suddenly present a threat, but with the targeting restriction narrowing it to a metagame call rather than a reliable engine. You cast this because you read the table and saw an artifact deck; you leave it in the deck for the games where no such deck shows up.
