Culling Drone

The distinction that makes ingest more than a flavor keyword is one letter of difference from a verb players already knew: it exiles rather than mills. That matters because milling can help the defender (fueling graveyard synergies, filling delve or flashback), while exile from the top of a library is pure subtraction with nothing recovered underneath. Ingest was the engine half of a two-part design, feeding a set of colorless payoffs that grew stronger the more an opponent had banished away, so a 2/2 connecting twice was not just chipping damage but loading a resource other cards would later spend. That job explains why the body is built to attack rather than trade: ingest only fires on combat damage to a player, so this wants to get through, not sit back. Devoid keeps it colorless, letting it both feed and be fed by the wave of colorless-matters effects the Eldrazi shell was built around, and the Eldrazi Drone type line ties it to anything checking for the tribe. On its own it accomplishes almost nothing memorable, which is honest to its purpose; it was never meant to close a game, only to keep the exile pile climbing until the threats that cared about it arrived. As a creature it is a plain two-drop whose upside reads as flavor first and function second, the kind of common that defines the texture of a mechanic without ever headlining it.
