Crumbling Sanctuary

The replacement effect here is symmetrical, and missing that is missing the whole card: damage to any player becomes exile from that player's own library, so the question this artifact poses is not "how much life do I have?" but "whose deck runs out first?" Against a burn or aggro deck, it neutralizes your own life total entirely and converts every incoming attack into self-mill, the conversion rate brutal enough that one big swing can strip a dozen cards toward a deckout loss. Pointed the other way, it turns your attackers and your burn into a milling clock on the opponent: every point you would have dealt to their life total instead carves cards off the top of their library and into exile. That symmetry is the design's real tension. It belongs to a strain of early-era experimentation with library-as-resource mechanics, treating the deck itself as a second life total that either player can be made to spend. The exile clause sharpens it further, since nothing dealt this way reaches a graveyard; both players' losses are permanent, foreclosing any plan that wants to reclaim those cards. The honest read is that this is a curiosity built on a contradiction it makes mutual: it shuts off damage as a path to zero life while opening damage as a path to zero cards, and whether that helps you or buries you depends entirely on which direction the damage is flowing.
