Crash of Rhinos
Eight mana for an 8/4 trample body, with the toughness deliberately set low so the power line never quite matches the cost. That four toughness is the whole story. It dies to almost any damage-based removal, falls to a single chump-and-burn line, and trades down against creatures it should tower over, which is exactly the tax green paid in the mid-1990s for raw size. Green's design identity then ran on glass-cannon fatties: enormous offensive numbers stapled to fragile frames, the assumption being that a creature this big either swings once for a haymaker or dies trying. Trample is the only concession to that math, ensuring the eight power is not blanked entirely by a token blocker. Read against modern green, where a similar mana investment buys a creature with resilience baked in (ward, recursion, an enters trigger that banks value before it can be killed), the card measures how much the color's curve has compressed and how much more efficient the same effect has become. Nothing on it has aged into relevance; what it preserves is the rate green creatures were balanced at before the power level of large bodies climbed and their toughness caught up.
