Crash of Rhino Beetles

Creature — Insect4 generic manaGreen mana

The threshold gag played straight. Ten lands is a real number, well past the point where a five-mana 5/5 with trample has stopped mattering, and the reward is a 15/15 that arrives long after green decks want their haymakers online. The design leans entirely on that timing mismatch: a body priced for turn five with a payoff gated behind a board state that usually shows up on turn eight or nine, by which point the game has often decided what it wants to be. That gap between when you can cast it and when it does the thing is the whole joke, and it is deliberate. The +10/+10 is not a modest bump you scale into; it is a binary switch that either flips or does not, with nothing in between. Land-count checks have a long history as ramp payoffs, but most of them scale smoothly or offer a floor. This one offers a 5/5 floor and a cliff. When it connects, fifteen power of trample ends things in a hurry, but the condition is doing more balancing work than the trample keyword ever will: control ten lands and the card is absurd, hold nine and you are swinging a 5/5 with a keyword into a format that stopped caring about that stat line a long time ago.
