Countervailing Winds
A counterspell whose price tag you write yourself. The tax it imposes scales with cards in your own graveyard, which inverts the usual relationship between a control deck's clock and its interaction: most counters get worse as the game drags, because the opponent floods into more mana than any fixed cost can hold back. This one hardens the longer the game runs, since attrition fills your yard and the soft counter creeps toward an unconditional one. The friction lives on turn three, when an empty graveyard means zero tax and the spell simply does nothing, its counter clause countering only what the opponent chooses not to pay for at all. That early dead zone is exactly what the cycling clause answers: a graveyard-matters counter that is useless early can be pitched for a fresh card and, not incidentally, adds itself to the very graveyard that powers the next copy. The design wants to be drawn late and discarded early, and it builds both halves of that arc into one card. It belongs to a long line of conditional countermagic that leans on the controller's own board state rather than a flat mana requirement, the structural cousin of effects that key off devotion, lands in play, or creature count; here the resource is the discard pile itself, the one zone a control deck is always quietly filling.
