Council of the Absolute

A naming effect that fires from both ends: the prohibition the Meddling Mage line is famous for, plus a discount bolted on top. Where the older bear simply bars opponents from casting the chosen name, this design keeps that lock and adds a payoff, so whatever you name becomes off-limits to your opponents while still castable by you, and two mana cheaper when you do. The restriction to noncreature, nonland cards is what steers the whole evaluation: it pushes the choice toward the instants, sorceries, planeswalkers, and artifacts you actually want to spam yourself rather than the creatures the earlier hatebears were built to silence. That asymmetry rewards mirror-aware play: name the removal spell or counterspell your opponent leans on, shut theirs off, and cast your own copies at a steep cut. The 2/4 body is the structural fix for the burn that historically punished naming effects on a small frame, since four toughness outlives the cheap red answers that would otherwise erase the lock the turn it lands. It is a denser, more demanding piece than the disruptive bears that preceded it: the discount only pays off if your deck actually runs the named card, so the reward scales with foreknowledge of both lists. That dependence on knowing exactly which name pulls double duty is why it never matched the plug-and-play simplicity of the two-mana hatebears it tried to outdo.
