The one damage is not wasted, either; it clears the X/1 blockers an opponent might otherwise hold back as the lone speed bump, thinning the defense on the same turn the swing comes. What pays for the effect is the timing. As a sorcery, it is locked to your own main phase, so there is no ambushing a defensive turn or punishing a declared attack: you commit to the alpha strike on your own clock, in full view, and the opponent gets a turn afterward to rebuild whatever survives. That sorcery restriction is the difference between a fair finisher and a back-breaking instant.
