The death trigger is where the value lives, and it reads the wrong graveyard on purpose. Where most black card-draw engines mine your own resources (Phyrexian Arena taxes your life total, Skullclamp loops your own bodies), this one counts creature cards in a target player's graveyard, so it scales off whoever has been losing creatures fastest. At a grindy table that has been trading bodies all game, it can refund a fistful of cards, with the life you pay scaling one-for-one against the draw so the refuel never comes free. The 4/2 body makes the engine fire on its own schedule: fragile enough to die in nearly any combat, small enough that nobody minds blocking it, so the trigger is rarely far away. That fragility is the design's quiet cleverness. A sturdier body would be a worse card here, because the whole point is to convert death into cards, and the easiest death to arrange is the one your opponents do for you. Pair it with a free sacrifice outlet and the toughness stops mattering entirely; you choose the moment, point the trigger at the fullest graveyard, and turn a creature stalemate into a refuel. Black draw-on-death effects have long asked you to spend life for resources, but the targeted, graveyard-scaling clause is what turns a fragile 4/2 into a payoff that grows the longer the game grinds.
