Controvert

Instant2 generic manaBlue manaBlue mana

Recover turns a hard counter into something that refuses to stay dead, but the trigger is the catch. The base spell is the most ordinary thing blue does: stop one spell, pay four. The keyword stapled to it gives the counter a conditional second life, except it only fires when one of your own creatures dies, and only then does it offer buyback at full price. Decline once the trigger fires, and it leaves your graveyard for good rather than waiting around. That makes Controvert a strange fit for the control shells that want counterspells most, because draw-go decks tend not to be feeding creatures to combat on a clock. It wants a board that bleeds: a deck where bodies are already trading, so the recursion piggybacks on attrition you were going to do anyway. The design tension is real and a little perverse: the more aggressive your creatures' deaths, the more reliably your permission spell comes back, which inverts the usual relationship between holding up countermagic and committing to the board. This is permission for a tempo deck rather than a draw-go one, and the steep recover cost (the full four mana again) means the second use is rarely free tempo so much as a late-game grind tool, something to cash in when you have mana to spare and a creature you were happy to lose.
