The counter-plus-cantrip template is one of blue's oldest comforts, a way to interact without spending a card: the replacement draw means you never fall behind on resources even when the spell you stopped was a feint. The trouble is always the rate, and here the rate is five mana, which reads worse than it plays in slow rooms but tells the whole truth in fast ones. Dissolve did nearly the same work for two less, scrying instead of drawing; the Cancel-shaped counters live at three. At five, this asks for a payment few decks want to make, because the same mana buys answers that also touch the board or close the game. Where it earns its keep is the grindier kind of game, the sort decided by inevitability and card advantage, where the marginal card matters more than the marginal mana. The design sits in a deliberately unglamorous corner of the counter spectrum: too expensive to trade on tempo, too card-neutral to feel costly once you have lands to spare. It is a counterspell for decks that have already decided mana is the resource they hold in surplus and cards are the one they need to keep tight.
