Counterspells that replace themselves are a perennial design challenge: pay full price for the card-neutral version, like Counterspell, and you get unconditional coverage; want the draw, and you have to accept a fence around what you can answer. This one draws its fence around removal and combat tricks. It only stops spells that target a creature, leaving board wipes, planeswalker spells, discard, and token-makers untouched. But against the exact category it covers, the trade is lopsided: an opponent spends a card pointing removal at your threat, you spend this, and you come out a card ahead while the creature survives. It is a protection spell wearing a counterspell's clothes, built to defend the investment of a single creature rather than to police the stack at large. The cantrip is what makes the narrowness palatable, but it is not a free release valve: you cannot fire this off into an empty stack just to dig, since it requires a legal target to be cast. The draw comes whenever you resolve this spell, not as an escape hatch when there is nothing to answer. That constraint is the whole tension of the card: it pays you a card only when the board hands you something to point it at, so it has always belonged to the tempo-minded blue deck protecting a clock rather than the control deck answering everything.
