Artifact Creature — Golem4 generic mana

A 4/4 for four colorless is a fair beater for the era, but the upkeep clause turns the card into a thought experiment. The trigger is a self-imposed tax on board development: keep your battlefield lean and the Golem stays put, but the moment your permanent count crosses into developed-deck territory, it bounces itself back to hand and asks to be recast. That inverts the usual artifact-creature pitch, where a colorless body is supposed to slot into any deck and stay there. Here the card penalizes the grindy, permanent-heavy builds that would most want a cheap repeatable threat, and tolerates only a sparse, tempo-minded shell that was never going to be the natural home for a four-mana 4/4 anyway. Its strategic window narrows exactly as a game opens up, which is the opposite of how a midrange threat is supposed to scale. Several early-era artifacts were built around drawback clauses that read as flavor first and constraint second; what sets this one apart is that its drawback keys to your own success rather than an opponent's action. As a thing to evaluate it is more interesting to discuss than to cast: a clean illustration of how a single conditional return can quietly disqualify a card from the very strategies its stat line suggests.
