Cloven Casting

The set this came from ran an experiment: every card in it was multicolored, and the deeper payoffs asked you to treat gold not as a deckbuilding cost but as a deckbuilding requirement. This is the loudest of those payoffs. Where most spell-copy engines key off a card type or a single color, this one fires only on the seam between two colors at once: every multicolored instant or sorcery you cast gets a one-mana echo. The gold requirement is the whole price of the engine. A copy of a charm with two live modes or a spell that bounces and burns in one breath is worth far more than a doubled cantrip, but you have to build a deck that almost never casts a monocolored spell to keep the trigger alive, and at seven mana that is a steep tax before the engine even turns on. The new-targets clause is what separates the copy from a mere louder original: removal answers a second creature, a counter forks onto a second spell, a charm's targets split across two problems. The cost runs high enough that this never pressured any format, and the build-around is narrow enough that it reads as a draft-of-the-imagination reward rather than a constructed staple. For a deck already living on gold spells, though, it doubles the value of cards you meant to cast anyway, for the price of holding one mana.
