The trigger inverts combat's basic exchange: blocking, normally the defender's safe play, becomes the thing that costs them a point. A defender ordinarily acts as gatekeeper, choosing on their own terms whether to trade or take the hit; this taxes the block itself, and the damage goes anywhere you like (to the face, to another creature, to a planeswalker). Because the target is unrestricted, the enchantment becomes a slow attrition engine even through a board stall: push small creatures in, force the chump or the trade, and shave a point off something every time a block is declared. It works best alongside go-wide aggression, where an opponent must interact with many attackers and pays per declaration, and with bodies they badly want to stop before connecting. The catch is its dependence on the opponent's cooperation: against a player happy to take damage to the face, it sits idle, and committing four mana to a permanent whose value lives entirely in their blocking decisions is no small ask. This is combat-step taxation from a period when the design language for enchantments was still being mapped, when the idea of charging a player for taking a specific game action (rather than simply pumping your own team) was a fresher concept. The angle, turning being blocked into a reward instead of a setback, is specific enough that almost nothing since has reproduced it at this exact shape.
