Monstrosity was conceived as a one-time mana sink: a creature that grew once, locked in with a fixed number of counters, and then had nothing left to do. Rolling a d8 pries that fixed number open into a range, so the body swells to somewhere between a 5/5 and a 12/12 depending on the result. But the swing that actually matters is the destruction trigger, and it hangs on a quirk of the keyword: monstrosity fires exactly once, because a creature that is already monstrous cannot become monstrous again. That makes the destroy effect a single-use payoff bolted to the top of the sink. You pay the activation, roll, grow, and blow up any permanent as the transformation lands. Gating the removal behind a commitment that large reads it as a finisher rather than an answer. The randomness is cosmetic to the destruction (the permanent dies regardless of what the die shows) but real to the body, and that split is the honest tension in the card: you are paying for a guaranteed Vindicate-style hit and gambling only on how much creature you keep afterward. Berserk here is an ability word, a flavor label for that destroy trigger rather than a mechanic in its own right; the only counters on the card are the +1/+1 counters monstrosity leaves behind. It is a clean expression of the die-roll subtheme, tying everything to one big activation instead of repeatable value.
