Clash of Titans

Instant3 generic manaRed manaRed mana

Fight spells live and die by two numbers: how much they cost, and whether they hand you a body for the price. This one gives you neither. Where Prey Upon puts a single green mana behind the collision and Ulvenwald Tracker folds the fight into a repeatable creature, five mana for an instant that just points two creatures at each other is a heavy tax on an effect the color pie has printed for far less. What the mana actually buys is the loose targeting: both fighters can be your opponent's creatures, a symmetry most fight cards deliberately close off by forcing one target to be yours. That is the whole pitch. It converts a green-style fight spell into red removal that can smash two enemy creatures into each other and clear both for one card, so long as the power numbers line up. The exposure is the resolution window: both targets have to stay legal until it resolves, so a lone sacrifice, blink, or bounce collapses the trade and strands your mana. Red has always wanted a way to kill creatures without leaning on a Firebolt-style burn spell, and this answers that wish at an awkward price; the open targeting is the concession that pays down some of the overcost, though never quite all of it.
