Chill Haunting

Instant1 generic manaBlack mana

The graveyard is the mana here, not the battlefield. Where most -X/-X removal scales with creatures you control or mana you tap, this prices the kill in dead bodies: exile X creature cards from your graveyard, kill a creature X-toughness or smaller. That makes it a payoff for the kind of black deck that grinds the early turns into a full bin, then cashes the whole thing in for a single instant-speed answer. The tension is obvious and intentional: the graveyard is a finite, one-way resource, so every point of -X/-X spent here is fuel you will never get back, and a deck that leans on recursion or threshold-style effects has to weigh the kill against the cost. It rewards the patient hand and punishes the empty one; cast it on turn two with nothing in the yard and it does nothing at all. That sequencing dependency is what keeps the rate from being free removal, and it slots the card into a specific kind of attrition shell rather than a generic removal suite. The instant speed matters more than it looks: holding it as a combat trick or an end-of-turn answer lets you bank graveyard fuel until the exact moment a single big creature needs to die, turning a passive resource into reactive interaction.
