Champion of the Parish

Creature — Human SoldierWhite mana

The payoff that defined what a one-drop lord could be when the tribe pays you over the whole curve instead of all at once. Most tribal anthems sit higher on the curve and lift the team uniformly; this one inverts the relationship, planting a single 1/1 on turn one and letting it accrue a +1/+1 counter for every Human that follows it onto the battlefield. The growth is permanent and self-only, which is the constraint that prices the aggression: there is no spread, no haste, no protection, so a removal spell cashes in the entire investment at once. The reward, then, is front-loading. Cast it first, cast it on turn one, and every subsequent body becomes a free buff rather than a missed trigger. The narrowness of "Human" is doing quiet work too: it is one of the broadest creature types in the game, which lets the card pull from a deep pool while still demanding a deckbuilding commitment that excludes the off-tribe filler other aggressive decks lean on. What makes it sting is the snowball math. A second Champion in play means each new Human grows both, and the curve compounds rather than adds. It rewards tempo over patience, which is why it has remained the canonical opener for Human aggression across formats: the earliest counter is always worth the most, and the deck is built to make sure that counter lands on turn one.
