Chain of Vapor

InstantBlue mana

The land-sacrifice clause is the genius of this bounce spell, and almost everyone misreads who holds the rope. The permanent goes back to hand unconditionally for a single blue mana: no payment, no condition, the spell resolves regardless. The wrinkle lives entirely in retaliation. The player whose permanent just got bounced may, if they choose, sacrifice a land to copy the spell and aim that copy at any new target. That is their decision and their copy, not yours. As a piece of incentive design it is a Faustian bargain pointed at the victim: eat the bounce and move on, or trade a land to fling the effect back across the table and bounce something of yours in turn. Most of the time the price is not worth paying, and the card behaves as a one-mana, one-for-one tempo play. The reason it has lived almost entirely in fast combo is that the whole calculus inverts when the controller is the one casting it. Bounce your own permanent, crack a surplus land off a board you are about to abandon in a goldfish kill, copy the spell, and chain into the next piece you want back in hand. The land you crack is spent fuel; the copy is the engine. A spell that reads as symmetrical retaliation in fair games becomes a self-targeting loop in a deck built to abuse it, with the sacrifice and the copy both pointed inward.

Return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand. Then that permanent's controller may sacrifice a land of their choice. If the player does, they may copy this spell and may choose a new target for that copy.
