Chain of Plasma

Instant1 generic manaRed mana

The Chain cycle from Onslaught built each spell on the same gambit: do something useful, then offer the affected player a choice to discard a card and bounce the effect back at you, copy intact, new target legal. The plasma version is the burn member, and the wrinkle that makes it tick is who holds the decision. Hit a creature and its controller decides whether to chain the copy; hit a player and that player decides. The discard is the price they pay to keep the chain alive, which means the spell becomes a negotiation conducted in card economy: you spend two mana for three damage, and your opponent decides whether to spend a card to throw three more back. The clever bit is that the copy points anywhere on resolution, so a chain doesn't have to ricochet between the same two faces; it can wander across the board as each affected player weighs three damage against a card in hand. Used proactively it is plain removal that opponents can pay to redirect; used as a finisher against a hellbent opponent (no cards to discard, no chain) it is just three to the dome with no strings. That asymmetry, where the same card is leaky against a full grip and clean against an empty one, is the design knot the whole cycle was built around, and the burn entry expresses it most directly because three damage is the simplest currency to bargain with.
