Ceremonious Rejection

InstantBlue mana

A counterspell priced at a single blue mana because the set of things it can stop is deliberately narrow: only colorless spells. That restriction sounds limiting until you notice how much of competitive Magic lives in colorless space. Artifacts, of course, but also Eldrazi titans, mana rocks, and the colorless threats that fall out of modern deckbuilding. Against the right deck, one blue mana answers a Karn on the stack or the largest Eldrazi in the format, all for a cost a deck barely registers. The card only touches things cast as spells while they sit on the stack, which is the boundary worth keeping straight: a construct token made by an activated ability was never a target, and neither was a colorless permanent already resolved onto the battlefield. The design lesson is older than the card itself: hate effects priced this low can answer threats far above their mana value precisely because they are useless in the matchups where they whiff. It belongs to a lineage of restricted, dirt-cheap counters that lean on a known weakness in a defined slice of the field rather than trying to be a general answer, kin to Flusterstorm and Mystical Dispute in structure if not in target. When the colorless menace is real, this is some of the most efficient interaction blue has; when it is absent, it is a blank, and the card was always built to accept that trade.
