Cemetery Gate

Creature — Wall2 generic manaBlack mana

A defensive curio built on a flavor pun: a gate in a graveyard wall that keeps the dead out, expressed mechanically as a black Wall that is itself impervious to black. The protection-from-black line is the whole joke and the whole function, because the body it sits on can only block. Against a mono-black aggressor, a 0/5 with protection from black is a near-permanent roadblock: it shrugs off the attacker's targeted removal, cannot be targeted by their pump, and bounces off their creatures in combat. The catch is that protection from your own color is a fragile design idea. It walls one specific opponent and does nothing against the other four; worse, it locks the card out of half the support a black deck would normally lend it, since black's own combat tricks read it as an illegal target. That self-exclusion is the friction that keeps the rate honest: a five-toughness blocker for three mana would be undercosted if it answered everything, so the card answers only the color it shares, and pays for the privilege by refusing aid from that same color. It belongs to the small Homelands tradition of cards whose abilities are written for a flavor image first and a metagame second, which is exactly why its protection points inward instead of at a color it could actually profit from hating.
