Cat Warriors

Creature — Cat Warrior1 generic manaGreen manaGreen mana

Forestwalk on an otherwise plain green body captures an idea Magic has largely abandoned: that a creature type should carry mechanical weight tied to terrain. The design logic is straightforward to the point of being naive. Green is the forest color, so green decks run Forests, and a green creature with Forestwalk slips past the one matchup where you'd otherwise expect to grind on the ground. A 2/2 that becomes unblockable in the mirror was a real consideration in an era when evasion was rationed carefully and most ground creatures of this size had no relevant text at all. The catch is everything else: against a non-green deck with no Forests, the Forestwalk line does nothing, and the card reverts to a vanilla 2/2. Landwalk as a mechanic was built around exactly this fragility, a power level that swings entirely on the opponent's manabase, and later design moved away from it precisely because that variance reads as feel-bad on both sides (whiffing against half the field or being unblockable for free against the rest). What remains is a snapshot of how green creatures were once priced: the creature type tells you what the card is, the color tells you who can't stop it, and the rate is calibrated to a metagame where the green mirror was a slot you expected to fight through rather than one you wrote off.
