Carom

Instant1 generic manaWhite mana

One point of damage, redirected from one target creature to another: that is the entire mechanical footprint, and it is built around a single moment in combat math where one point is the whole margin. Picture a board where your blocker and an attacker are set to trade, and a second enemy creature sits one point shy of dead. Carom shaves the lethal point off your creature and deposits it onto that weakened body, walking away with a survivor and a kill from a single redirect. The cantrip carries the card's economy: a one-point reroute in isolation is too thin to sleeve, but stapled to a draw it costs nothing to hold, and the spell solves the perennial problem of the combat trick that needs to feel free to keep open. Where most white instants that touch combat fog or buff in bulk, this works on a scalpel's edge, caring only about the difference between survivable and dead when that gap is exactly one. The fixed quantity is the discipline: it can never escalate into a blowout, so it stays a tempo-neutral combat tool rather than removal disguised behind a card draw. A design that rewards a board already balanced on a knife's edge, and asks the pilot to recognize the precise instant when one point decides two creatures' fates.
