Four mana to gain four life is a rate that would never see print on its own, so the spell isn't really the lifegain at all: it's the cascade trigger, with the four points of life resolving on top of whatever the dig finds. The design here is the inverse of how most cascade cards work. Usually cascade rides on top of a spell you'd happily cast anyway, the free hit sweetening an already-functional card. Here the printed effect is deliberately thin, a vestigial four life, because the whole point is to convert four mana into a free three-mana-or-less spell you may cast while padding your life total on the way down. Cascade reliably finds the first nonland card with lesser cost, so the lifegain is a steady second course rather than a fallback; what varies is which spell you find, not whether you find one. The randomness is the cost: the spell you get is whatever the deck builder chose to allow, not what the moment demands. That hands the burden of evaluation entirely to deck construction. Stack the eligible band with three-cost bombs and every cast is a windfall; let a stray two-drop slip in and the trigger flips something forgettable. What it represents is cascade used as a delivery mechanism rather than a bonus: a card whose visible text is almost an afterthought, built to be valued by the engine it activates rather than the effect it prints.
