Call to Mind

Sorcery2 generic manaBlue mana

The plainest possible version of spell recursion, priced at a number that has always been its problem. Three mana to get one instant or sorcery back is honest math: you spend a card and a turn to convert a card already spent into one in hand, and the rate only justifies itself when the thing you're returning is worth far more than three mana. That makes this a build-around tool rather than a maindeck staple, the kind of card that wants a graveyard salted with a single bomb, a board wipe, or a combo piece you cannot afford to draw only once. The lineage it belongs to is long and unkind to the middle of it: Regrowth does the same job a mana cheaper and for any card type, and a parade of cheaper or more flexible blue retrieval has filled the slots around it. What keeps it from real work is the absence of any upside attached to the cost: no card draw stapled on, no flashback or buyback on the recursion itself, just the spell back and nothing else. The reach of the effect is genuinely wide (any instant or sorcery in the yard is fair game), but reach without efficiency is exactly the trade a sorcery-speed three-mana recursion spell makes. It is a clean, teachable piece of design that exists mostly to show what the floor of graveyard recursion looks like before a set decides to push it.
