Cabal Ritual

Instant1 generic manaBlack mana

Dark Ritual's overachieving cousin, designed for graveyard-centric decks fast enough to cash the threshold clause. The base mode is barely worth the slot: one generic and one black in, three black out, a single mana of profit that rarely earns a card on its own. The whole engine turns on the second line, where seven cards in the bin convert that same investment into five black mana, a three-mana surplus that has historically funded explosive combo turns. That asymmetry is the entire idea, and it is exactly what this kind of threshold design was working through: the keyword as a deferred payoff that rewards a player for stocking the yard with intent, not as an incidental bonus. Fire it on turn two and you get acceleration nobody needed; let a discard outlet, a fistful of fetches, or a self-mill engine do the work first, and it becomes a burst of mana that pays for something the game state otherwise cannot afford to hard-cast. The floor exists only so the early draw is not dead; the threshold ceiling is what storm and reanimator pilots are actually buying. Its value climbs as the board decays into the graveyard, which is precisely the conditional, late-game power this era of black acceleration was printed to explore.
