Burnished Hart
Ramp wears a body here, and the deferral is the point. Most colorless fixing fetches on arrival: Solemn Simulacrum gets one tapped land and leaves a blocker behind, while the older Wayfarer's Bauble cracks for a single basic. The trick this Elk pulls is splitting its cost across two turns. You pay three to deploy the artifact early, then later pay another three and sacrifice it to grab two basics at once. That second payment is the whole transaction: you front the body when you are mana-light, then redeem it once you have spare mana, fixing two colors in a single activation rather than dribbling them out one land at a time. The 2/2 frame matters precisely because it is disposable, and note where the value comes from: sacrificing the Elk is the activation cost itself, so it cannot be fed to an outside outlet and still fetch lands. The ramp and the death are the same event. That coupling is what makes it a fit for sacrifice-adjacent and graveyard shells: an artifact creature that wants to die, fixes your mana when it does, and trips any creature-leaves-the-battlefield trigger on the way out, all from one button press. The price of the delayed second installment is speed; this is patient ramp, not explosive ramp. What the patience buys is timing control, since you choose the turn the two lands actually land.
