A red enchantment that pays you for winning the card-advantage war, a fight red almost never wants to be in. The upkeep trigger deals damage equal to your hand size minus your opponent's, so it sits idle in the matchup red usually plays: empty your hand of burn and threats, race the clock, win before the long game arrives. This wants the opposite posture, a fat grip on your side and a wrung-out one across the table, which cuts directly against the color's deepest instinct. Against a hellbent aggro deck the differential can spike, but against control sitting on counterspells and refills the math runs negative and the burn simply never fires. The timing compounds the volatility: the trigger waits until your upkeep, so the differential is measured after a full cycle of both players drawing and casting, making it far harder to plan around than a fixed burn source. It comes from an era fascinated by cards-in-hand as a resource axis worth taxing and rewarding, scattering repeatable hand-size payoffs across the format. The ambition outruns the execution at for an effect this conditional, and the conditions point red away from how it actually wins. But the underlying idea, red punishing an empty hand instead of producing one, is a stranger and more specific statement of color identity than the rate suggests.
