Bubbling Beebles

Creature — Beeble4 generic manaBlue mana

The Beebles are Urza's-block flavor whimsy: a goofy creature type that the design team handed a real mechanical hook, namely the wave of enchantment-matters cards that defined the era. The evasion clause here is parasitic in the best sense; it does nothing in a vacuum and everything against the right opponent. Pay attention to who the unblockable rider points at: the defending player. This is not a creature that grows or breaks through walls on its own. It is a wager that the other side of the table is full of enchantments, and in a block stacked with auras, Pacifism effects, and enchantment-based engines, that wager often paid off. The result is a body whose threat level is set entirely by the metagame rather than by its own stat line, which is a strange and honest place to put a creature: it asks the question "is your opponent the kind of deck that plays enchantments?" and rewards a yes. That conditional design is the whole point. Wizards has returned to enchantment-hosers and enchantment-rewarders many times since, but few have framed the relationship like this, where the opponent's own commitment to enchantments is what springs your creature loose. It reads as a joke card and largely played as one, but the underlying idea (evasion contingent on what the other side has committed to the board) is a clean piece of conditional design wearing a silly Beeble costume.
