Brushland
The painland template, codified. The deal: a dual that taps for either of two colors immediately, untapped, the turn it enters, in exchange for one damage every time you reach for colored mana. That trade reads cheaper than it is. The colorless option exists precisely so the land is not a strict liability: when you only need generic mana, you take no damage, which means the painland is never a dead card and only ever charges you when the fixing matters. The friction is self-scaling, and it sorts decks by how much they value their own life total. Beatdown decks barely register the cost; they are racing, not defending, and untapped fixing on turn one is worth more to them than the trickle of damage. The slower the deck, the worse the bargain: a control shell that needs to survive into the long game is the one that cannot afford to bleed for its colors. That self-sorting calibration explains why painlands have aged as a balancing tool rather than a power-creep casualty. As the green-white member of the original five, it was reprinted alongside its siblings often enough to become the reference rate for what a one-life-per-tap dual should cost. Later land families chased painless fixing through other restrictions, but the painland's bargain has never needed an erratum: pay in the resource you have the most of, on the turn you need the color, and let the math decide whether the discount was worth it.
