Bronze Horse

Artifact Creature — Horse7 generic mana

The damage-prevention clause is the design point worth sitting with: a conditional ward that only functions while you control a second creature, and only against spells that target this Horse specifically. The card is a piece of early design vocabulary for protection, written before hexproof or shroud existed as keywords. Rather than making the creature untargetable, it lets opponents aim removal at it freely and then quietly fizzles the damage, which is a narrow window: the clause stops a targeted burn spell or a damage-based removal effect, but it does nothing against a destroy or exile effect like Swords to Plowshares or Terror, and nothing against a sweeper. The "another creature" rider is the structural restriction that keeps the ability honest: strip the board down to just the Horse and the protection evaporates, so the card asks to be played alongside a warm body. A 4/4 trampler at this cost was a rough rate even in its era, and the prevention clause was the intended compensation, though it answers only one slice of the removal a finisher actually fears. The design idea, a creature whose protection is gated on board presence rather than on mana or color, has shown up in subtler forms since, but rarely with this specific shape: prevent the damage, not the targeting, and only the damage that arrives by spell.
