Bristling Backwoods

Land — Desert

Enters-tapped duals have always carried an implicit tax: you surrender a turn's worth of speed for fixed colors, and the design question is what, if anything, buys that tempo back. Here the answer is a single point of damage to an opponent on the way in, a small but pointed nudge for a Gruul manabase that would rather be attacking than sitting still. Because it hits target opponent rather than any target, the point cannot be aimed at a blocker or a planeswalker; it is a face-only trickle. That narrowness is what earns it a slot at the margins of aggressive decks: incidental reach that finishes a game the burn spells almost closed, a stack of these adding up to a slow drip against a defensive draw. The Desert typing is the quieter half of the design, threading the fixing into a subtheme that cares about Deserts as a resource to sacrifice or leverage, so the land carries a tribal-land relevance beyond its two colors. None of this makes the tapped clause painless; the land is honest about the tempo it costs. But it belongs to a lineage of fixing that hands the tap-land tax a purpose rather than simply eating it, and direct damage is a cleaner rider for an aggressive color pair than the scry or lifegain other tapland cycles have leaned on.
